Knowing Why Golf Is Misunderstood As Non-Athletic

By George Ashe

When one thinks of an excellent sport, golf may be the furthest in the minds of the usual audience. Mainstream audiences look for entertainment and thrill when watching sports events. Among many of these mainstream audiences, describing golf as a thrilling affair sounds like an overstatement.

The reason why golf is almost always misunderstood is because the viewers don't have full understanding of the dynamics of the sport. Golf has more to do about the environment than its players. The brunt of a golfer's performance, like all other sports, is in harnessing one's spatial awareness.

The scenery of golf events is another reason why people find it difficult to describe their events as thrilling and competitive. The beauty of nature has its own unique way of instilling a calm and placid aura that is contrary to anything stimulating adrenaline rush. Who would feel fiery and aggressive in a place that makes you think of "a relaxing walk at the vibrant prairie"?

People are easily convinced that golf is an easy sport to play as far as athleticism goes. However, just because the dynamics and the cadence of the game are not hectic and panic-stricken does not necessarily mean it is not tiresome. Imagine walking through hundreds of yards under the beating sun during competitions right after a very powerful swing.

Common people often mistake strength for simple aerobic hyperactivity or lean muscular physique. It is even amusing how the non-martial nature of golf is often associated for the player's perceived lack of physical shape. However, repetitive swinging of the club against a ball to be thrust for miles into the air develops the muscles in the arms and the abdomen.

If getting the ball off the ground from point A to point B is already quite challenging, getting the ball into the hole is taking the task to the whole new level. Unlike football stadiums or boxing rings, a golf course does not have a plane surface. Therefore, a player's wits and reckoning is put to the test by negotiating with the unalterable slopes and moors.

No matter how mastered a golf player is in swinging the club and thrusting it on a certain direction, he or she is still not off the hook with the natural difficulties of the game. Apart from the uneven jagged topography, the golfer has more trouble with the velocity of the wind and its direction. Just because the expert golfer wants to fly his or her ball westward, it does not mean the wind would agree to it.

The sport called golf may be rarely understood by many, but those who truly appreciate it do possess tremendous passion. Golf is more like a "man vs. natural elements" sport rather than "man vs. man" physical contest. One can never underestimate the enormous task of being in harmony with nature, which is one of the most important aspects of golf as a sport.
